After the storm passes: what to check
Wait until it is genuinely safe, and stay off the roof. Everything below can be checked from the ground or from inside.
- Shingles, or pieces of shingle, in the yard or driveway
- Dents or dings on gutters, downspouts, vents, or metal flashing
- Piles of granules where your downspouts drain
- Water stains or damp spots on ceilings, especially near the chimney
- Dark streaks on the underside of the attic decking after a hard rain
- Neighbors getting roofs replaced — hail rarely hits just one house
